IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
Ever dreamt of not having to wax, put up with in-grown hairs or remove your unwanted hair every few weeks? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a very popular and non-invasive treatment with clinically proven results that we offer at Beauty Queen Skin & Body Salon. Our therapists at Beauty Queen Skin & Body Salon have been extensively trained in IPL treatment, so you can rest assured that you will be receiving the best possible treatment.
What is IPL?
IPL is a much more comfortable treatment than other hair reduction methods such as waxing or traditional laser treatments, and it can also be much more cost-effective in the long run. The treatment works by killing off the growing cells that produce unwanted hair, thereby leaving you with an 80% to 90% reduction in unwanted hair. Any hair that does grow back after the treatment tends to be a lot lighter, finer and thinner, and the treatment can be done on several areas of the body including the legs, upper lips, chin, neck, back, under arm area, fingers and bikini area.
How does IPL Hair Reduction work?
IPL is different from laser hair removal as it uses a high-powered light that contains multiple different wavelengths as opposed to the one single beam of light that is used in laser hair removal. During an IPL treatment, unwanted hair is ‘shot’ with flashes of intense pulsed light. This light is absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, in the hair, rapidly turning the energy into heat. In turn, this kills the growing cells that produce the hair in that particular area.
Hair growth takes place in cycles of 3 stages – active hair growth (Anagen), shedding (Catagen) and an unpredictable stage when the hair is neither growing nor developing (Telogen). The active hair growth stage is the optimum stage for successful IPL hair reduction because at this stage the hair is still attached to the papilla, so the IPL can attack the papilla and prevent any new hair growth. Only a small amount of hair is at the active hair growth stage at any one time, and this is the reason why a full course of IPL hair reduction typically consists of 6-10 sessions and is recommended for best results. The time taken for each session of IPL largely depends on the size of the area you are targeting and your hair type.
Waxing, or other forms of hair removal is not recommended in between the sessions, as IPL requires actively growing hair to ‘target’ in order to be effective. In addition to this, because IPL treatment uses light, and because of the way light is attracted to dark pigments, IPL works best on those with dark hair and fair skin, although different machines have different capabilities. At Beauty Queen Skin & Body Salon, we make sure to use the best possible equipment. However, those with fair hair or darker skin tones are unlikely to achieve long-term results with IPL. Alternatively, we are able to offer more suitable services at our salon.
Most people describe IPL treatment as painless, with just a small amount of sensation being felt on the skin during the actual treatment and some mild redness being experienced following the treatment. However, each person has a different level of sensitivity. Therefore, a consultation and a patch test is done at our salon by one of our specially qualified therapists prior to commencing the treatment in order to assess your suitability for the treatment. Following this, our therapists can recommend a course and package that would best suit your needs, whether that is IPL or an alternative treatment.
It is recommended to avoid any exposure to the sun for a few days following IPL treatment, and it is also a good idea to avoid staying in the sun prior to treatment as tanned or sunburnt skin will not react well to IPL treatment and can have detrimental effects, including scarring.
Hair removal has a very individual response due to skin tone ethinicity hormonal levels lifestyle and the commitment of the client to have the treatment planned carried out in the appropriate timeframe as prescribed.
Ongoing touch-ups (following the fully prescribed course completion) are available at very reduced prices.
